Fishing Mozambique

It is with great regret that we have to tell all our fishermen world wide that due to the over fishing by locals and the recent climatic conditions we have to stop our fishing safaris until further notice.

We will keep you all posted if the fishing conditions change anytime in the future. Thank you for all your support in the past, we hope that we will get to see you all again sometime in the future.

Take care, Russ & Julie         Cal & Jo

Fishing at Safari Trails Mozambique (STM) - Chawalo Lodge

All fishermen dream of landing that elusive “big one” and catching tigers!

Chawalo Lodge is a preferred destination for tiger fishing. We utilize prime fishing waters that run from the confluence of the Luangwa and Zambezi Rivers (on the Zambian / Mozambique borders), through the headwaters of Cahora Bassa and into the lake, offering both fast and calm water fishing.

Big tigers strike at any time, so fishing guests are welcome at any time of the year. However, June – August generally provide prime fishing conditions for our guests. There are not many locations in the world where you can fish for tiger whilst enjoying the sights and sounds of the local wildlife.

The numerous islands that lie within the waters just opposite “Chawalo lodge”, form channels where monster tiger fish hunt the bait fish which move in from the floodplains and lagoons.

Tiger fishing at Chawalo is world class! In our fishing area 10lb tigers are a regular occurrence and 18lb plus tigers are not uncommon. Our current camp record stands at a whopping 23.15lb.

Most of our fishing is conducted within 15km of camp, therefore less time wasted on travel and more time to fish!

At Safari Trails Mozambique (Chawalo Lodge), we are proud to offer the best fishing guides for your safari. They share many years experience fishing the great Zambezi. Their friendly and helpful dispositions will make every fishing day on the river a memorable one. We strongly advise that you bring ALL your fishing tackle requirements with you, whether you are a fly or conventional fisherman. If required and by prior arrangement, we can provide access to lodge equipment so that you have every opportunity to realize your expectations. However, please remember that we have a 20min boat ride and a 5 hour road trip to the closest department store. 

Each morning, after a quick cuppa with rusks and cereal, guests depart from the lodge at first light. Destination… their guide’s preferred fishing spot for the first session. The kitchen staff will prepare a light travel snack and a cooler box of refreshments (choices depending on availability). All boats return to camp at about 11:30am for a hearty brunch and “story swopping” of their fishing successes and wildlife sightings.

Once brunch is over it is “rest and relaxation time.” Lazing in the pool, reading, sleeping, bird watching or preparing tackle for the afternoon fishing session. All boats leave at about 15 00hrs, returning at dusk.

After a full day`s fishing on the river, you will truly enjoy coming home to the comforts of Chawalo Lodge. Upon your return to camp, you will be welcomed with plentiful snacks and ice cold drinks around the camp fire. The night air will be filled with laughter and fishermen’s tales, whilst also experiencing the unique sounds of lion roaring and hyena laughing in the distance – Africa at its most captivating. Our camp cooks will amaze you with exceptional cuisine, created from home grown and locally sourced ingredients.

Boats

Our four aluminum boats are especially designed for fishing this stretch of the Zambezi. Three of our boats are 17,8 foot “Pikes” with specially designed fishing decks. These decks take into consideration the advice given by professional fly fishing guides, ensuring your every comfort while fishing with us.

Our fourth aluminum boat, is an 18,5 foot Orca, with a deck layout ideal for conventional fishing.
All four of these craft are powered by 100hp, four stroke, fuel injected Yamaha motors.

We also run three 17,5 foot conventional fiberglass boats. For your comfort, we prefer to accommodate up to 8 fly fishermen, i.e. two anglers per boat or up to 12 conventional spinning fishermen i.e. three per boat, at any given time.

Mozambique is a malaria area and prophylactics must be taken. Please speak with your physician in this regard. You will need to start your prophylactics a week before your date of departure.
Yellow Fever inoculation cards are compulsory for re-entry into JHB International, from Lusaka Airport. It is advisable to have it ready to produce at any customs check point on your trip.
